Remember in the GOF, we found out Hogwarts was unplottable and if muggles were to stumble across it, there are signs to say DO NOT ENTER and CONDEMED. that does suggest that it is a fantastic building and shows signs that it holds deep secrets. but as far as the feast and eveything, i think it has something to do with merlin and the whole round table thing. just how they sit and relate to each. And dont forget about Avalon convent. if you see the movie, theres a huge resemblence.

Well, all things considered J.K's current residency is in Scotland, in quite partial to the castles from Macbeth. But, I haven't really cracked down on the architectural similarites, or differences. I'm just saying that Scottish castles are probably the way of the J.K

England has a long thousands of years of history recorded so some ideaa might even have come from information about destroyed places
It has lots of castles and palaces still standing some not even royal they are just old buildings designed in a certain style
Also some of the ideas could be nice things in existing places but JK toned them down make them seem a little gloomier but still nice
The idea of a gamekeeper who lives in a little hut in the grounds is not new
The feast that reminds me of a traditional feast with the king and the royals at a top table with his geusts at a big table all feasting
I think its based on lots of things from lots of countries

I don't know much about castles (we certainly don't have any around where I live) but the castle in the movies does look like the French castles, but based on the site of the Edinburgh castle.

I've looked at several online resources that suggest that Hogwarts from Harry Potter the movie was based on Edinburgh Castle. If one examines the castle beyond a cursory glance, it is obvious that it has to be based on something else. The foundation of the castle resembles Edinburgh Castle but Hogwarts itself appears completely different. It looks just like chateau de busset in France. I would like to clarify that this is not to say that the book had that intent. My point is just that judging purely from the image circulated from the movie suggest that it is rather the french castle. I dare say that it may be based exactly off this French castle given the positioning of all the buildings.
Here are links of a pic of Edinburgh castle, and two additional pictures of Chateau de Bourbon Bussett

It would be nice if you can let me know what you think. Perhaps I am wrong. Just curious.
