You can do either one.
It's up to you really. Everyone's different.
Some people make up their own characters, but have them related to the original characters in the book. Others just make up their own characters entirely. And then there are the people who stick with the original characters and pick at which time the setting is taking place in.
Once the posts start going, it really gets fun. And yes, it is like acting! ( Yay, I made sense... a bit... lol.)

I think I get it. Kind of like acting.. Do we choose H.P characters, I assume? Or do we make up our own?

Hmmmm.... How to explain?...
Role playing involves each person contributing to a certain topic to create a story-like feel to it. Uh... *laughs*... it's basically like telling a story. It's usually done from a 2nd or 3rd person POV and each person usually has the same amount of characters. There isn't really a limit to how many people can join an RP.
I'm not sure if the person who posted this thread is still watching it though... And I'm sorry if my explanation reeked and left you with the same (or more) questions! If you still want to try an RP, I'm still up for it.

Hello! I would like to join you for your RP.
Since you have a boy and a girl, would you like to do a doubles RP? I have characters, girl and boy, in mind as well and I wouldn't mind using them both... or just using one of them, for that matter.

Of what kind, I do not care, all I care about it being able to do the roleplay!
But naturally, I do have a couple characters in mind, boy and girl, so if you'd please just step forward and announce your ideal characters, that would be splendid.
